Smart Packing for the Andes: Facing the Altitude

Smart Packing for the Andes: Facing the Altitude

Packing for the Andes is less about filling a suitcase and more about managing rhythm. Thin air slows the body when you land in Cusco, so light walking shoes, a wind shell, and easy wool layers for day one make a real difference. Choose merino or technical fabrics over cotton; damp cotton chills you fast.

Sun at altitude is sharper than it looks. A brimmed hat, SPF 50, and UV sunglasses turn daytime walks from harsh to pleasant. Nights drop quickly; a thin thermal base and gloves help even on short walks between hotel and dinner.

Keep electrolytes, throat lozenges, and personal medication in a daypack. Refill water often—dehydration fuels altitude headaches. One solid trekking shoe and a city sandal cover most routes better than three pairs of sneakers.

Leave flexibility in the schedule. Postpone hard climbs for the first 24–48 hours. Good packing gives your body time to settle into the Andes.
